Darlington Sehgbean is a Liberian-born first-generation college graduate with a degree in Political Science and Sociology. Growing up amid civil unrest, he developed a deep passion for advocacy and youth empowerment. His journey to the United States, marked by resilience and determination, solidified his belief in the transformative power of education. While at Minnesota State University, Darlington led initiatives to enhance student resources, promote inclusivity, and advocate for international student rights. He is committed to creating opportunities that empower communities and inspire positive change.

Upward Bound Program

Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. As a mentor of the Upward Bound, I had the opportunity to work with high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree, to achieve the Program's goal of increasing the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

Student Leadership Retreat

The Maverick Involvement Leadership Retreat is a yearly initiative provided by the Student Activities Division at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Serving as the president/program's operations coordinator for the Maverick Involvement Team division, my team led the retreat, which turned out to be an interactive experience that provided training in various leadership skills, including the CliftonStrengths Assessment, for over 50 students.

The Youth Assembly

The Youth Assembly is a global platform that cultivates an international network of young leaders and changemakers through exchange, education, action and impact. I had the opportunity to experience this prestigious program in New York City in 2022, joining over a thousand linked-minded change drivers from across the world.

American Model United Nations (AMUN)

The American Model United Nations (AMUN) provides the highest quality, most professionally-run Model UN conference available anywhere. In 2021, I had the opportunity to experience the AMUN in Chicago. This provided me with an experience of educational quality with highly realistic simulations of the United Nations which showed how the United Nations works in the real world.

Minnesota House DFL Caucus

Following my graduation in May 2024, I secured a position with the Minnesota House DFL Caucus as the Field Organizer during the 2024 election cycle. In this role, I led campaign operations for Representatives Jeff Brand, Luke Frederick, and Heather Holmes in Districts 18A, 18B, and 24A. I coordinated strategic outreach initiatives, mobilized volunteers, and maximized voter engagement efforts to strengthen district-wide support and drive voter turnout by recruiting and training volunteers for phone banking, door knocking and Getting Out The Vote for our DFL candidates up and down the ballot.

International Student Healthcare Resolution

Served as At-Large Senator for Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Student Government, leading a successful campaign to extend the split-payment option for student health insurance, reducing financial stress for students.

"The Destined Child" is an inspiring memoir capturing my journey from a small village in Liberia to life as a college graduate in the United States. Through a series of challenges—including family hardships, the impact of the Liberian Civil Wars, and the loss of my mom at the age of eight—I share my journey of resilience and the transformative power of education. The narrative delves into my commitment to advocacy, justice, and leadership, shaped by my desire to support underserved communities and empower youth. The Destined Child is a testament to perseverance, hope, and the pursuit of dreams against all odds.
